Sapporo City Guide: Miso Ramen, Beer History, and the Snow Festival

Sapporo works as a city trip on its own, built around the ramen style it's famous for, a historic beer brewery, and Hokkaido's biggest winter festival.

Miso ramen and where to find it

Sapporo is widely credited as the birthplace of miso ramen, and Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley) in Susukino packs a cluster of small, competing shops into one narrow lane — a good way to compare a few in one outing. Nijo Market, closer to downtown, is the place for fresh Hokkaido seafood — uni, crab, salmon roe — either to eat there or take a self-assembled seafood rice bowl (kaisendon) from one of the stalls.

Sapporo Beer Museum and Susukino at night

The Sapporo Beer Museum, housed in a red-brick former brewery building, is Japan's only beer museum and traces the company's founding in the late 1800s during Hokkaido's early development push. Following a 2026 renovation for the company's 150th anniversary, the self-guided museum floor is no longer free to enter — admission runs around ¥1,000 for adults (discounted for Hokkaido residents, free for elementary-age kids and under), on top of a paid tasting in the on-site beer hall, so budget for both and check current pricing before you go. Susukino, one of Japan's largest nightlife districts, is where most of Sapporo's evening energy concentrates, with everything from casual izakaya to karaoke and bars.

The Snow Festival

Sapporo's Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival), held over about a week each February, fills Odori Park with large-scale snow and ice sculptures — some genuinely massive, built by teams including the Japanese military. It's Hokkaido's biggest single tourist draw and hotels book up well in advance; exact dates shift slightly year to year, so confirm before planning a trip specifically around it.
