Hokkaido in Summer: Furano's Lavender Fields and Hakodate's Night View
Hokkaido isn't only a winter destination — Furano's lavender season and Hakodate's historic port and night view make a strong case for summer too.

Furano and Biei's flower fields
Furano's lavender fields, most famously at Farm Tomita, typically bloom from around late June to late July, with the deepest color usually in early-to-mid July, turning entire hillsides purple — genuinely one of Hokkaido's most photographed sights. The exact window shifts a bit year to year with the weather, so check the farm's current bloom updates before committing to a date rather than assuming it'll match a past year exactly. Neighboring Biei is known for a patchwork of rolling farmland in different colors and crops, best explored slowly by rental car along back roads rather than rushed by bus.
Hakodate: night view, morning market, and a star fort
Hakodate's night view from Mount Hakodate, reached by ropeway, is commonly counted among Japan's three great night views (alongside Nagasaki and Kobe) — the shape of the peninsula below creates a distinctive hourglass pattern of lights. The Hakodate Morning Market, near the station, is a good early breakfast stop for fresh seafood, and Goryokaku, Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fort, dates to the Boshin War era and has a tower for viewing the full star shape from above.
Hakodate is a couple of hours from Sapporo by limited express train or a short flight, and pairs naturally with a Sapporo-based trip if you have the extra days.
A seasonal contrast worth knowing
If you're choosing between a Hokkaido winter trip and a summer one, know that they're genuinely different experiences — skiing, snow monsters, and the Snow Festival in winter versus lavender fields, hiking, and noticeably milder weather in summer. Neither is the 'wrong' season; it depends what you're actually there for.
