Yamanashi is more than a Fuji viewpoint — it is also Japan's main wine region, with a granite gorge and pick-your-own orchards near Kofu city.

Japan's Wine Region: Katsunuma
The Katsunuma area near Kofu is the historic center of Japanese winemaking and grows Koshu, a native grape used for a light, distinctive white wine that's earned genuine international respect over the past couple of decades. Dozens of small wineries offer tastings, many walkable from Katsunuma-Budokyo Station, though hours and English support vary by winery, so it's worth calling ahead.
Yamanashi is also known for grapes and peaches, with pick-your-own orchards running through summer and early autumn — exact picking windows shift year to year with the weather, so check before planning a trip around one specific fruit.
Shosenkyo Gorge and Kofu
Shosenkyo Gorge, a short bus ride from Kofu, is a granite ravine with waterfalls and hiking paths that gets especially crowded during autumn foliage, with real weekend traffic possible in November. Kofu itself is a low-key city with a modest castle ruin and sits about 90 minutes from Tokyo by limited express, making it a workable, uncrowded base — and Fuji is visible from parts of the area on clear days, as a bonus rather than the main draw.
