Japan's Top Strawberry-Growing Prefecture
Tochigi has held the title of Japan's largest strawberry producer for decades, helped by a climate and greenhouse infrastructure suited to winter and spring cultivation. The prefecture developed its own branded varieties, most famously Tochiotome, a classic sweet-tart berry, and the larger, premium Skyberry, bred for size and sweetness and often sold at a higher price as a gift-quality fruit. Strawberry season generally runs December through May, peaking around January to March, making it available through winter.
Strawberry Picking and Eating Customs
Pick-your-own farms (ichigo-gari) are popular across Tochigi, usually charging a time-limited flat fee for all-you-can-eat berries straight off the plant — prices and picking windows change by farm and season, so confirm current details before visiting. Locally, strawberries are often eaten plain or dipped in condensed milk rather than turned into desserts, and Tochiotome shows up in parfaits and fruit sandwiches sold at bakeries and convenience stores statewide during peak season.
