Saitama: Kawagoe's Edo-Era Streets and Chichibu's Pink Moss Phlox Fields
Saitama isn't a standalone destination, but Kawagoe's old warehouse district and Chichibu's flower fields make easy half-day trips from Tokyo.

Kawagoe, the 'Little Edo'
Kawagoe's old town preserves a street of kurazukuri — thick clay-walled merchant warehouses from the Edo period — along with a wooden bell tower (Toki no Kane) that still rings and a candy-shop alley selling traditional sweets, many made from the area's well-known sweet potatoes. It's about 30 minutes from central Tokyo by train, which makes it one of the easiest historic-townscape day trips available.
Chichibu's shibazakura and night festival
Chichibu, in Saitama's mountainous west, is known for Hitsujiyama Park's shibazakura (moss phlox) display each spring, where patches of pink, white, and purple flowers carpet the hillside with Mount Buko in the background. In December, the Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan's major float festivals, with elaborately decorated floats and fireworks pulled through town after dark.
Honest framing
Saitama rarely functions as a destination in its own right — most visitors treat it as a half-day or full-day trip from Tokyo rather than a place to base a longer stay, and that's a fair way to plan it.
