Osaka Food Guide: What to Eat and Where to Look

Osaka is widely considered Japan's food capital. Here's what to actually order, and the neighborhoods known for each dish.

The dishes to know

Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancake) are Osaka's signature dishes — both are casual, inexpensive, and widely available. Kushikatsu (breaded, deep-fried skewers) is another local specialty worth seeking out.

Where to look

Dotonbori is the famous, neon-lit food street and a reasonable starting point, though it leans touristy — wandering a few blocks into the surrounding backstreets (Ura-Namba) tends to turn up less crowded, equally good options.

One rule of thumb

A line of local people outside a small counter restaurant is a genuinely reliable signal in Japan — it's rarely there for tourists.
