The dishes to know
Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancake) are Osaka's signature dishes — both are casual, inexpensive, and widely available. Kushikatsu (breaded, deep-fried skewers) is another local specialty worth seeking out.
Where to look
Dotonbori is the famous, neon-lit food street and a reasonable starting point, though it leans touristy — wandering a few blocks into the surrounding backstreets (Ura-Namba) tends to turn up less crowded, equally good options.
One rule of thumb
A line of local people outside a small counter restaurant is a genuinely reliable signal in Japan — it's rarely there for tourists.
