Nagano: Snow Monkeys, Matsumoto Castle, and the Japanese Alps
Nagano covers a lot of ground: wild macaques bathing in a hot spring, one of Japan's few original castle keeps, and alpine trails anyone can hike.

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park
Near Yamanouchi, Jigokudani is where wild Japanese macaques famously soak in a hot spring pool — a real wild troop, not staged, and they use the pool most reliably on cold winter days. Reaching it means a roughly 1.6 km walk from the parking area through forest that gets snowy and slippery in winter, so proper footwear matters more than it might seem.
Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's few original wooden castle keeps, not a concrete rebuild, with a black exterior that's earned it the nickname 'Crow Castle.' The interior stairs are steep, narrow, and original, which is atmospheric but worth knowing if you're visiting with small kids or older relatives.
Kamikochi and the Alps
Kamikochi is a highland valley in the Northern Alps with clear mountain views and mostly flat, well-marked trails along the Azusa River, so it's accessible to non-technical hikers, not just serious climbers. Private cars can't enter the valley — you park outside and ride a shuttle bus in — and the whole area closes for winter, typically mid-November to mid-April, so confirm current dates before planning a visit.
