Day Trips from Fukuoka: Itoshima's Coast and Yanagawa's Canal Boats

Two easy half-day trips from Fukuoka city: Itoshima's beaches and cafes on the coast, and Yanagawa's slow canal boat rides through an old castle town.

Itoshima

Itoshima, a coastal area west of Fukuoka city, has become popular for its beaches, surf spots, and a growing cluster of cafes and bakeries in converted old buildings. Its best-known sight is Sakurai Futamigaura, a pair of connected rocks in the sea joined by a shimenawa (sacred rope) that lines up with the sunset at certain times of year — a genuinely striking, frequently photographed spot, best reached by rental car since public transport around Itoshima is limited.

Yanagawa's canal boats

Yanagawa, south of Fukuoka city, is a former castle town built around a network of narrow canals, and the main visitor activity is a slow boat ride (kawakudari) through them, poled by a guide who often narrates or sings along the way. It's a low-key, scenic couple of hours rather than a major sight, and pairs well with a visit to nearby Dazaifu on the same day trip.

Getting there

Both are accessible from Fukuoka by train or bus in under an hour, making either a realistic half-day trip without needing to change hotels — though as with most of Kyushu outside the main city centers, a rental car opens up more of the surrounding area if you have the time.
